The human body is an amazing conglomeration of differing systems that check and balance innumerable bodily functions. One of the most complicated and coordinated of these is the circulatory system and its main component, blood.  Blood is the central carrier of life-sustaining nutrients and molecules. In order for blood to be most effective, it must be free-flowing. However, blood also must be able to cease flowing when necessary – such as after a cut. This complex process of regulating blood fluidity for circulation is called hemostasis.  Hemostasis is a complex, dynamic system. It is helpful to have a basic understanding of hemostasis even when performing simple, routine laboratory testing. The purpose of this module is to provide an overview of hemostasis theory for medical and laboratory personnel involved in patient care and testing.
