We all start as undifferentiated embryos having components of both sexes. Hormones play an important role in gender development and its subsequent maintenance, both in utero and throughout life. We begin with information about reproductive anatomy and its related endocrinology followed by a discussion of several hormones of the reproductive system and the importance of their balance in normal sexual development. The topic continues with a focus on the delivery of hormones, specifically the steroid sex hormones to their target organs by the sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) and its role in hormone regulation.
